Tayport’s bid to reach the last four of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup never really got started, with visiting Lochee United scoring twice inside the opening ten minutes to thoroughly deflate the hosts.
A corner kick should really have been cleared, but the ball broke for Gary Middleton, who lashed it into the back of the net, with less than two minutes on the clock.
Darren Scott had Tayport’s best opening of the match shortly afterwards, when he strode clear of the Lochee defence. His low shot lacked power, though, and Iain Ross was able to dive and get a strong hand to the ball.
Then, in the ninth minute, after a free kick was delivered into the ‘Port box, Colin Watson was left free at the back post to plant his header beyond Frazer Fitzpatrick.
Barry McNaughton suffered a head-knock midway through the half, which necessitated his withdrawal and a trip to hospital. It was clearly not going to be Tayport’s day.
At the start of the second half, McNaughton’s replacement, Barry Donachie curled a shot narrowly over, but the game’s crucial third goal was netted by Lochee. Jason Alexander delivered a deep cross from the right and Phil Hagan moved away from David Black, at the far post, and sent an audacious volley into the top corner for a wonder-goal.
That strike ended any faint hopes of a comeback and a second yellow card for Mick O’Donnell did not help the ‘Port cause.
So, for a second successive match, the Canniepairt outfit were down to ten men and it was no real surprise to see the Bluebells net a fourth, courtesy of substitute Paul Blackwood.
Fitzpatrick, Black, O’Donnell, Ferguson, Wemyss, Morris(Pepper), Whatley, McNaughton(Donachie), Elvin(Kenneth), Bryce, Scott.
