Old foes Tayport and Lochee United both live to fight another day in the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup, after drawing their quarter-final tie at Thomson Park.
In an intriguing match, ‘Port opened the scoring, before being reduced to ten men, with Lochee equalising midway through the second half before also having a man sent off, in injury-time.
Frazer Fitzpatrick was the first ‘keeper in action, touching a driven Lukas Krobot free kick around the post, at the expense of a corner. At the other end, Darren Scott later saw a shot deflected narrowly wide, as ‘Port began to look the more dangerous side.
The visitors took the lead on 26 minutes. Lee Bryce collected possession on the right side of the area, skipped past his marker and sent the ball across the face of goal, where it struck Lochee defender Graeme Hay on its way into the corner of the net.
Unfortunately, not long after that breakthrough goal, right-back David Black was red-carded, on the advice of the assistant referee, after seemingly retaliating to a crude, late challenge by Craig Robertson, who was cautioned.
In the second half, ‘Port had a couple of half-chances, on the break, but it was Lochee who netted the next goal, on 67 minutes. Fitzpatrick saved Gary Middleton’s initial effort, but the former Tayport star found the net with a subsequent shot.
The numerically disadvantaged Tayport continued to defend strongly, however, and they remained something of a threat to the hosts. Substitute Barry McNaughton went close after pouncing on a poor clearance by home ‘keeper Iain Ross. Fellow sub Ronnie Kenneth also put Ross under pressure in the closing stages, but the custodian was able to retrieve the situation.
With time ebbing away, the Bluebells had John Thompson dismissed, for his second bookable offence, his first having been a needless deliberate hand-ball, in the Tayport box, within the first few minutes.
Tayport : Fitzpatrick, Black, O’Donnell, Hunter, Wemyss, Morris, Whatley, Donachie(McNaughton), Elvin, Bryce(Kenneth), Scott.
